Dates:
Jan 16, 2012 - Jan 21, 2012
Description:
The art of creating art out of snow! Over a period of 6 days, international artists design figures and sculptures out of meter-high blocks of snow. The World Snow Festival has developed into one of the most fascinating and popular winter events in the glacier village Grindelwald, and today it's hard to imagine the season's programme without it. Every January Grindelwald hosts the international Snow Festival on the natural ice-rink in the village centre. What began with a huge Heidi carved in the snow by Japanese artists, has since developed into a cultural happening that is not to be missed. Teams of artists from different countries delight both young and old, guests and locals, with their artistry. The artists' work becomes an exclusive attraction turning the village square into a hive of activity, and always gaining much respect. The six-day festival comes to a close with a ceremony accompanied by folklore performances. A jury of experts judges the giant sculptures according to the criteria of topicality, originality and skill. The works of art are judged not only by specialists but the public can also give the sculptors an opinion based on the impressions of the spectator. The festival concludes with a traditional fondue dinner and tobogganing for the youth and young at heart.

Millennia old, banned by the Spanish, revived in the 40's and not a good day to be a llama... it's the Inti Raymi! This was once a major festival in the Inca capital of Cusco as the Incas worried that the sun might disappear and never return. To appease the sun god Wiracocha, a whole farm's worth of llamas used to be sacrificed. Luckily for llama farmers (and llamas) everywhere, today's reenactment only symbolically cuts llama throats. As well as mock llama execution there's also ancient costumes, an Inca high priest on parade in his golden throne, speeches in the traditional Inca language and hundreds of thousands of locals and tourists. Get there very early if you want standing room with the locals, or whip out your wallet and book ahead for a seat!

Fiesta de la Virgen Blanca
Event Type:
Music, Culture, Festival, Parade
Country:
Spain
City:
Vitoria-Gasteiz
Dates:
Aug 3, 2012 - Aug 8, 2012
Description:
"Basque" in the sunshine and splendor of Vitoria-Gasteiz's most celebrated festival honoring its patron saint the Virgen Blanca. The five days of festivities starts with a bang, literally, as city officials spark the traditional "chupinazo" firework. But while the namesake speaks to all that is good and pure, the festival is by no means devoid of debauchery. In fact, the real star is not the Virgin at all, but an effigy of historical character and infamous local partier named Celedón. In the early nineteenth century, this man was known in the region for being the biggest party guy around. Even when the fiestas were not going on, he would travel to neighboring cities as a merrymaking evangelist. Since Vitoria-Gasteiz's festival was among his favorites, the town pays homage to his great PR skills with a ridiculous ceremony. Basically, locals dress up a life-size dummy in white, give him a haversack, wineskin and umbrella, and hang him above the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca on a series of wires and dedicate the opening ceremony to blowing smoke at him. As night falls the darkened sky is lit by the Procession of Lanterns, a glowing display of multi-colored glass lanterns. The following days feature a steady stream of folk music parades, street shows, open-air dancing, and of course plenty of bullfighting.

Aug 29, 2012 - Aug 29, 2012
Description:
The ultimate food fight where nobody gets out clean. Squash a tomato and let it fly. It all began on the last Wednesday of August in the year 1945. A group of teenagers were watching the festivities and parades of the gigantes y cabezudos (carnival puppets with enormous heads) in the Town Square. They decided to try to join the parade of musicians and gigantes y cabezudos. One of the parade’s participants got angry as a result of the teenagers’ actions, and started to hit everything in his path. The crowd then also became furious, and in a twist of fate, they took tomatoes from a nearby vegetable stall and began to throw them at one another. This continued until law and order was restored and the vegetable battle had to stop. Ever since this obscure but entertaining event has taken place.

Country:
India
City:
Himalayas
Dates:
Sep 1, 2012 - Sep 25, 2012
Description:
The Wobbly Wheels Rally is the only of its type in the world-- pitting some of the most challenging terrains against some of the most badly built machines and people for the job. Teams of one or two will be expected to take a scooter with an engine smaller than 125cc (not so tough!) to some of the remotest, most difficult to reach corners of the Indian Himalayas (think Ladakh, Kashmir and Spiti). To add to the fun and general confusion, there will be no route mapped out. Instead, teams will have a list of challenges (a remote spot, reaching which will take all the wits and strength of participants and scooters!) based on which they will have to create their own route. To spice it up, teams will not have access to a GPS and must rely on paper maps with often incomplete information. For three weeks 20 teams will be negotiating dangerous mountain passes, getting lost, sleeping under the stars, learning local languages and having the time of their lives. This is a view of life in India like no other.

The Festival of the First Fruits is the most important of all Swazi festivals, an intricate series of religious rituals serving to renew, maintain and cement kinship ties. The three-week festival, stretching from late-December into January includes plenty of singing and dancing as well as ancient ritual. Warriors in full traditional garb gather outside the King’s private quarters to lure out their hiding ruler. After much begging and dancing, the star performer of the day finally dons his ceremonial dress and emerges from his palace to perform his long-awaited, sacred dance in front of his devoted people, and then he takes a bite of the season’s first fruits with the blessing of the ancestors. Be warned, tourists are barred from seeing certain parts of the ceremony and the locals tend to be rather sensitive to cameras. The exact dates of the festival are fixed by astrologers after performing complicated solar and lunar calculations, so be sure to check with the tourism board before you go!
